The business of the avocado
is in the markets of USA and
France. These two strategic places
in America and Europe,
lead the imports in their geographic
areas and mark the
commercial tendencies.
Spain, like the first producing
country of the European
Union with a volume of
around 80,000 tons, knows
quite well the needs of the
French market. In fact, France
monopolizes more than 40
per cent of the Spanish exports
of this product that were
50,330 tons in the year 2009,
although it competes directly
with markets like the Israeli,
Mexican or South African keeping
its leadership in the share
of business.
The exports of Mexico and
Chile are controlled by the important
American consumers.
In fact, the Mexican operators
sent 80.5 per cent of the total
of their sendings that were
374,541 tons. Japan and France,
are the other two important
destinations. In particular, they
mean 6.1 and 2.5 per cent,
respectively and a positive tendency
facing the two next campaigns,
thanks to the constant
demand of this subtropical
The “six” countries of the
world-wide avocado
The business of the avocado in the world is managed by six producing
countries, where the supply coming from Latin America stands out, with
Mexico as the main country surpassing one million tons, followed by Chile
(250,000 tons) and Peru (136,0000 tons). In Europe, Spain monopolizes
the production; Israel in Middle East and, finally, South Africa in the African
continent.
product among the consumers.
In the case of the Chilean
avocado, the market of the
USA keeps on being its main
customer and the export already
means 70 per cent of the
export operations. The European
market is following it,
thanks to the advertising campaigns
of the Chilean “lobby”,
since it receives more than
50,000 tons. Holland (29,556
tons), mainly for the re-export,
Spain (10,997 tons) and the
United Kingdom (8,014 tons)
as the most important destinations.
