Abstract<br />

INTERACTIONS OF FOUNDATIONS AND EXPANSIVE SOILS: PATHOLOGY,<br />

CALCULATIONS AND EXPERIMENTAL STUDIES<br />

This report is divided into six chapters. In the first chapter the problems of expansive<br />

clayey soils around the world and in Morocco are reviewed, then their physical and<br />

mechanical properties, mineralogy and structure are <strong>des</strong>cribed, with emphasis on<br />

their behaviour during w<strong>et</strong>ting. In the second chapter, on the basis of the authors’<br />

experience, the various damages observed in buildings in Morocco because of the<br />

expansion of clayey soils are <strong>des</strong>cribed.<br />

The following two chapters are devoted to the calculation of stresses in shallow<br />

foundations and of the foundation s<strong>et</strong>tlement or heave: Chapter 3 analyses the stress<br />

changes in reinforced concr<strong>et</strong>e shallow foundations which are induced by the non<br />

homogeneous heave produced by soil w<strong>et</strong>ting from a water source which can be<br />

located at any position with respect to the structure. Chapter 4 is devoted to the effect<br />

of the foundation load on the stress state in the soil and on the strains which develop<br />

upon w<strong>et</strong>ting and can produce either s<strong>et</strong>tlement or heave, depending on the relative<br />

values of the swelling pressure and the vertical stress in the soil.<br />

The last two chapters present an experimental study of shallow foundations on<br />

expansive soils, which was performed in the city of Ouarzazate: In Chapter 5 the<br />

results of laboratory tests on soil samples taken at two depths under the foundations<br />

are presented and analysed in terms of water content effect on the deformations,<br />

permeability and resistance of the expansive clayey soils. The full scale experimental<br />

site and the results of the load tests performed on four shallow foundations at<br />

different stages of w<strong>et</strong>ting and drying of the expansive soils are presented in Chapter<br />

6. These results are then analysed with due account of the laboratory test results and<br />

calculation formulae presented in the preceding chapters.<br />
