The Maltese-flagged Greek tanker “OLIB G” was hijacked by Somali pirates
while transiting the Gulf of Aden on September 8, 2010. The vessel and her crew
consisted of 3 Turks and 15 Georgians. It became possible to free them from
harsh conditions only after 16 months, on January 8, 2012.
Piracy was considered to be a forgotten topic until present. However, recent
frequent pirate attacks in Somalia coastal waters have inflicted huge financial
damage to the world. Piracy – the crime of the 17 th Century – has become a “new”
challenge for the world politics.
The goal of this article is to present piracy as a topical problem of international
politics and to discuss international law regulations connected with piracy; to
summarize causes of piracy and its prevention strategy on the basis of analysis of
a specific case heard by Hamburg Court against piracy and review of an ongoing
mission of the UN for Somalia Coastal Waters.
