TEXTBOOKS TO LANGUAGE TEACHING AND LEARNING IN<br />
EFL CLASSROOM ∗<br />

Abstract<br />
This paper stresses the importance of selecting and evaluating textbooks in the process of<br />
language teaching and learning. To this end, the implications for this process are employed to<br />
address the issue of how the teacher trainees in the English department at Dokuz Eylül University<br />
are likely to benefit from such a methodological course. Moreover, it aims to illustrate the criteria<br />
for selecting and evaluating textbooks while seeking to build such a theoretical framework onto<br />
the learning and teaching process in which the teacher trainees are, in practical terms, actively<br />
indulged. This paper also relies on the empirical data obtained from students’ perceptions of the<br />
course in question which they took in the first semester of the fourth year. Students’ answers to<br />
the relevant questions are intended to bring about data on students’ common tendency toward<br />
this course.<br />

Özet<br />
Bu makale, yabancı dil öğretimi ve öğrenimi sürecinde, ders materyallerinin seçimi ve<br />
değerlendirmesinin önemini vurgulamaktadır. Bu kapsamda, Dokuz Eylül Üniversitesi, İngilizce<br />
Bölümünde öğrenim gören öğretmen adaylarının böyle bir dersten ne şekilde<br />
yararlanabilecekleri tartışılacaktır. Bunun yanı sıra, makale ayrıca, ders kitaplarının seçimi ve<br />
değerlendirilmesine dayanak teşkil edecek olan temel kriterleri sunmayı ve böyle bir teorik<br />
uygulamayı, öğretmen adaylarının aktif bir şekilde yer alacağı öğrenme ve öğretme süreciyle<br />
birlikte ele almayı amaçlamaktadır. Öğrencilerin dördüncü sınıfın ilk döneminde aldıkları<br />
‘materyal değerlendirme’ dersi ile ilgili bireysel görüşlerinin değerlendirilmesi ile elde edilen<br />
veriler, çalışmada önemli bir yer tutmaktadır. Aynı şekilde, öğrencilerin kendilerine yöneltilen<br />
sorulara verdiği cevapların, ‘materyal değerlendirme’ dersine yönelik genel eğilimleri hakkında<br />
önemli bulgular sağlaması beklenmektedir.<br />
