MARTIN BIRCH (World Wide Director of Kodak) <strong>in</strong> the Middle East:<br />
We are the market leader and the number<br />
one <strong>in</strong> the GCC<br />
Eastman Kodak Company,<br />
commonly known as Kodak, is<br />
an American mult<strong>in</strong>ational<br />
imag<strong>in</strong>g and photographic equipment,<br />
materials and services company<br />
headquartered <strong>in</strong> Rochester, New<br />
York, United States and <strong>in</strong>corporated<br />
<strong>in</strong> New Jersey. It was founded by<br />
George Eastman <strong>in</strong> 1889.<br />
Kodak is best known for photographic<br />
film products. Dur<strong>in</strong>g most of the<br />
20th century Kodak held a dom<strong>in</strong>ant<br />
position <strong>in</strong> photographic film, and <strong>in</strong><br />
1976 had a 90% market share of photographic<br />
film sales <strong>in</strong> the United<br />
States. The company’s ubiquity was such that its tagl<strong>in</strong>e “Kodak<br />
moment” entered common lexicon as a personal event that<br />
demanded to be recorded for posterity. As part of a turnaround<br />
strategy, Kodak focused on digital photography and digital pr<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g<br />
and attempted to generate revenues through aggressive patent<br />
litigation. <strong>Al</strong> <strong>Bayan</strong> Magaz<strong>in</strong>e met the World Wide Director for the<br />
Document Management, Enterprise Services and Solutions of<br />
Kodak <strong>in</strong> the Middle East Mart<strong>in</strong> Birch and conducted <strong>this</strong> <strong>in</strong>terview<br />
with him.<br />
* How can you describe Gitex 2012<br />
- Gitex is <strong>in</strong>credibly impressive, it just gets bigger every year and its<br />
fasc<strong>in</strong>at<strong>in</strong>g to see all the manifacturers here and the great support<br />
from the public so simply the show is superb. The Gitex Dubai show<br />
is professional and one of the best shows <strong>in</strong> the world and it is<br />
amaz<strong>in</strong>g to see all these different technologies here and i th<strong>in</strong>k the<br />
people locally do a terrific job on the show as for us as Kodak, it is a<br />
fabulous opportunity to show the world our latest products and<br />
directions and the way we can add efficiencies <strong>in</strong>to bus<strong>in</strong>esses<br />
without technologies.<br />
This year, we took a much more bigger stand that is open on all full<br />
sides with a very simple style. This openess is a way of us<br />
welcom<strong>in</strong>g people <strong>in</strong>to our stand and show<strong>in</strong>g them all hospitality.<br />
We really wanted to show our commitment to the Middle Eastern<br />
market.<br />
* The kodak products no more<br />
<strong>in</strong>clude cameras<br />
- We had a hundred years as a film<br />
company and I don’t know many<br />
bus<strong>in</strong>esses out there that can actually<br />
have a bus<strong>in</strong>ess for a hundred years for<br />
a one particular product l<strong>in</strong>e. Th<strong>in</strong>gs<br />
move on and as a company we have to<br />
move to the next technology and for us<br />
now the technology is digital so we<br />
moved from the analog bus<strong>in</strong>ess of film<br />
<strong>in</strong>to digital and we are now all about<br />
mak<strong>in</strong>g bus<strong>in</strong>ess much more efficient<br />
with the digital <strong>in</strong>formation so we fully<br />
transformed ourselves from be<strong>in</strong>g a<br />
film company to an <strong>in</strong>formation one.<br />
* How do you describe the GCC market with respect to Kodak results<br />
- The GCC region is very important for us and it is show<strong>in</strong>g phenomeral<br />
growth, so we have a very good market share here and<br />
grow<strong>in</strong>g sales. We are very committed to <strong>this</strong> market, we’ve <strong>in</strong>vested<br />
more <strong>in</strong> the GCC bus<strong>in</strong>ess <strong>this</strong> year and we plan to keep <strong>in</strong>vest<strong>in</strong>g a<br />
l<strong>in</strong>e with our gowth.<br />
* Is it easy to f<strong>in</strong>d professional human resources <strong>in</strong> the CGG<br />
region<br />
- There are a lot of very professional people here and the level of talent<br />
is <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g over time, we have some of the highly educated<br />
people <strong>in</strong> the world and real talented professionals and we are really<br />
pleased to be able to attract them to Kodak.<br />
* What is your message to all competitors <strong>in</strong> the market<br />
- Competition is healthy because it keeps people strong and <strong>in</strong>novat<strong>in</strong>g.<br />
We like to be challenged and as Kodak, we are the market<br />
leader and the number one. Competition keeps push<strong>in</strong>g us to raise<br />
our ga<strong>in</strong>. We <strong>in</strong>novate all the time and br<strong>in</strong>g new products to the market.<br />
This year, we have some very <strong>in</strong>terest<strong>in</strong>g new developments for<br />
Gitex. For the first time we’re show<strong>in</strong>g arabic OCR on our software<br />
which is unique for our <strong>in</strong>dustry and thus customers <strong>in</strong> the arab world<br />
can actually use arabic documents and can extract <strong>in</strong>formation from<br />
the software and recognize the arabic words which for us as an <strong>in</strong>ternational<br />
company is very important.<br />
