The earliest surviving written sources discussing the education and moral of the
villagers and their parish neighbors date from the beginning of the 18 th century. They
are written by the pastor of Rõngu, Theophilius Eichler, and tend to show that the
villagers of the time did not believe the Christian moral values to be especially
important, and did not have a great amount of respect for their pastor. Concerning the
education, it is known that the first school in the area was founded in the Uderna manor
in 1765.
