Glavni del svoje poklicne kariere je posvetilorganizaciji visokega šolstva, kjer je opravljal različne »administrativne«vloge, do ministra v osemdesetih in predsednika parlamentarnega odbora zaznanost in tehnologijo v devetdesetih. Sedaj je predsednik Sveta RS za visokošolstvo.Franci Pivec is a philosopher and sociologist, and has also studied informationscience.
