Großer Brief an (den englischen Premierminister Sidney G o d o lphin), den er um Instruktionen für
seine weiteren Verhandlungen über Hilfstruppen aus deutschen Staaten bittet; ferner über Verhandlungen
mit dem verbündeten Preußen und mit dem Reich. – Im Mai hatte England Frankreich den Krieg
erklärt.
„... I did by my last send you the Convention for the ten thousand Hannovers. I forgott to acquaint you
that I had made the same agreement with them, which I had done formerly by his late Ma[jes]tys Commands“
(des am 19. März verstorbenen Königs Wilhelm III.) „with the rest of the foraine troops, for the
stoping two and a half per Cent to serve for their Contingencys, it is not what will be suifficient, but there
being noe more agreed for by the rest of the forainers, by the Kings Commands, I cou’d not propose more
... I desire you will acquaint her Ma ty “ (Königin Anna) „with this, and that I may have her aprobation[.]
the Quota for England is now completed, all but 700 foot. The States have desir’d mee to acquaint
her Ma ty with an offer of the Bishope of Munsters“ (Christoph Friedrich v. Plettenberg, der mit den Hilfsgeldern
das münstersche Militär ausbaute) „to furnish them with four thousand foot, they say their Charge
is soe great, that unless England helps them, they cant goe on with the Treaty. The complyance of that Bishope
in the Empire is absolutly necessary, I told them that if I had known of this before I had concluded the
treaty with the house of Hannover, I cou’d have taken 2000 in part of our ten thousand …
Monsr. Lillinroot had assur’d mee that his master will not march into Saxony, unless he shou’d be necessitated
for his own defence, and that he is very confident that will not happen this yeare …
I have acquainted the Pensioner with her Ma tys desire, concerning the King of Prussia“ (Friedrich I.)
„they are resolv’d to doe all reasonable things to keep this king in good humour, but his demands are not
very reasonable, soe that I am afraid his stay here will be very uneasy to the States …
... as to the sending a Person to attend the King of the Romans“ (der spätere Kaiser Joseph I.), „the
Count de ffrize that is now in that Army, and very well with Prince Lewis“ (Markgraf Ludwig Wilhelm von
Baden, der „ T ü r k e n l o u i s “ ), „and having allways employ’d by the late King to that Prince, I shou’d
think he wou’d give the best account of such a Commission for this Summer ... I believe he will be acceptable
to both king, and Prince ...“
Nach seinen Erfolgen gleich zu Beginn des Krieges wurde Marlborough im Dezember des Jahres von Königin
Anna in den Herzogsstand erhoben.
