1.6.4 Disconnectors and post insulators<br />
The vast majority of the disconnector types associated with the 110 kV substation redevelopments<br />
are of an obsolete design that comprises many component that are in poor condition, primarily<br />
because of extensive mechanical wear over time. Many of them also have multi-piece, porcelain<br />
post insulators installed that are susceptible to failure, particularly those installed in harsh service<br />
environments. Multi-piece post insulators are susceptible to surface erosion and cracking or<br />
breaking of insulator sheds. Over time, deterioration reduces the mechanical and electrical integrity<br />
of the insulator, leading to mechanical and electrical failure.
