1.6.5 Protection and control Renewal Capital Expenditure TNM-GR-809-0929 Issue 1.0, January 2009 The protection and control systems associated with the 110 kV substation redevelopment projects comprise predominately electromechanical relays, with some static devices, both types of which need to be replaced because they are susceptible to component degradation and failure, poor performance, lack of spares and have minimal functionality. Electromechanical or static devices are obsolete technologies and require frequent maintenance and repair compared to modern microprocessor protection schemes.
