often thought about management’s success in discovering this young engineer’s<br />

leadership abilities so early. Perhaps they should have c<strong>on</strong>sidered<br />

using the b<strong>on</strong>d drive and other similar opportunities to help them better<br />

get to know their people and their potential for early promoti<strong>on</strong>.<br />

EXTERNAL PROFESSIONAL ACTIVITIES<br />

There are leadership positi<strong>on</strong>s in all sorts of professi<strong>on</strong>al organizati<strong>on</strong>s<br />

outside of a company’s activities, as well as opportunities to dem<strong>on</strong>strate<br />

professi<strong>on</strong>al leadership by writing articles for publicati<strong>on</strong> in professi<strong>on</strong>al<br />

journals.<br />

Make certain that external professi<strong>on</strong>al activities like these are promoted<br />

in your organizati<strong>on</strong>. When some<strong>on</strong>e is active as an accountant,<br />

engineer, salespers<strong>on</strong>, marketer, or human resources worker in a professi<strong>on</strong>al<br />

organizati<strong>on</strong>, take note of it. Write a letter of c<strong>on</strong>gratulati<strong>on</strong>s, publicize<br />

and encourage these activities. Your paying attenti<strong>on</strong> to what people<br />

are doing dem<strong>on</strong>strates that you are taking the time to know them. It<br />

rewards their extra work and c<strong>on</strong>tributi<strong>on</strong>, and it also helps give your<br />

organizati<strong>on</strong> a good name.<br />

EXTERNAL SOCIETAL-BENEFIT ACTIVITIES<br />

An example of external societal-benefit activities might be a fund-raiser<br />

d<strong>on</strong>e outside the company for a good cause, cleaning up a park, or anything<br />

else that needs to be d<strong>on</strong>e and benefits society. Again, there are many<br />

opportunities to develop leadership here.<br />

These activities provide powerful opportunities for you to learn more<br />

about your workers. The <strong>on</strong>ly cauti<strong>on</strong>ary note is to be careful about stressing<br />

these activities to the extent that it takes away from the organizati<strong>on</strong>’s<br />

main missi<strong>on</strong>. D<strong>on</strong>e correctly, however, these activities can support the<br />

missi<strong>on</strong> of your organizati<strong>on</strong>, as well as help you to really know and understand<br />

your people and to develop and make the best use of their talents.<br />

There is little questi<strong>on</strong> that the leader of any organizati<strong>on</strong> of any size has<br />

an amazing impact <strong>on</strong> that organizati<strong>on</strong> and the outcome of whatever<br />

activity in which it is engaged. All of us have seen organizati<strong>on</strong>s that were<br />

previous failures, flourish when a new leader is put in charge. The new
