had an extraordinary, in-depth knowledge of so many topics.<br />

Yet there were a few areas of business which he seemed to exclude as a<br />

distinct element to study and I never thought to ask him why. For example,<br />

I was surprised that he did not emphasize leadership more in his<br />

writings or in his classroom presentati<strong>on</strong>s. After all, almost every management<br />

writer you can name has also written <strong>on</strong>e or more books <strong>on</strong> leadership,<br />

and some of them focus <strong>on</strong> leadership to the exclusi<strong>on</strong> of other<br />

aspects of management.<br />

I always thought this was because he thought leadership was so basic<br />

to every aspect and functi<strong>on</strong>al area of management. I still believe this was<br />

the reas<strong>on</strong>. In fact, he did not minimize the importance of leadership; it<br />

ran through most of his lectures and many of his writings, especially over<br />

the last ten years. However, <strong>on</strong>e day <strong>on</strong>e of my classmates asked him about<br />

the fact that he had not written a book <strong>on</strong> leadership. Peter replied, “The
