the language spoken by the majority <strong>of</strong> the population in a country, such<br />

as English in the USA. A language spoken by a group <strong>of</strong> people who form<br />

a minority within a country is known as a minority language, such as<br />

Italian and Spanish in the USA.<br />

an abbreviation for multivariate analysis <strong>of</strong> covariance<br />

manner <strong>of</strong> articulation n<br />

the way in which a speech sound is produced by the speech organs. There<br />

are different ways <strong>of</strong> producing a speech sound. With CONSONANTS the<br />

airstream may be:<br />

a stopped and released suddenly (a STOP), e.g. /t/<br />

b allowed to escape with friction (a FRICATIVE), e.g. /f/<br />

c stopped and then released slowly with friction (an AFFRICATE), e.g.<br />

/dÔ/ as in /dÔem/ gem.<br />

The vocal cords may be vibrating (a voiced speech sound) or not (a<br />

voiceless speech sound) (see VOICE 2 ).<br />

With VOWELS, in addition to the position <strong>of</strong> the tongue in the mouth,<br />

the lips may be:<br />

a rounded, e.g. for /uN/ in /‹uN/ shoe; or<br />

b spread, e.g. for /iN/ in /miNn/ mean.<br />

manual method n<br />

a method for teaching the hearing impaired, based on the use <strong>of</strong> SIGN--<br />

LANGUAGE. There are many different manual communication systems;<br />

some, such as American Sign Language (A.S.L.) have their own linguistic<br />

rules which do not resemble the grammar <strong>of</strong> English. Those who are<br />

entirely dependent on A.S.L. or similar manual codes may therefore have<br />

difficulty reading, writing, or lip-reading English. Some manual codes<br />

such as Signed English or the Pagett-Gorman system are based on English,<br />

and learning to read and write English is easier for those who have<br />
