Despite small differences of spelling (Bletz. and Blays are both phonetic
spellings for Blois, the 'oi' being so pronounced at this period), and the
omission ofJean Granjon as a co-partner in the second, it is evident that these
two summaries are invoking the same privilege.
A work of canon law, Lectura in quinque Decretalium Gregorianarum libros, by
Cardinal Henricus Hostiensis, came out two months later, summarising the
privilege given at Blois on 12 March 1512, in this instance to reckon the three-
year period from 12 September 1512. It was published jointly by Jean Petit
and Thielman Kerver (CH 1512, 1(4) ). This time the summary of the terms
of the privilege has been re-drafted, and read as follows:
If Le Roy nostre sire a donne et octroye a Jehan Petit libraire jure
de 1'universite de
Paris. Et Thielman Kerver Imprimeur et libraire jure en ladicte universite Privilege
dessusdict privilege. Donne a Bloys le douziesme jour de Mars L'an Mil cinq centz et
unze. Par le Roy. Et signe Geuffroy.
This statement, as printed in the Hostiensis, is repeated
word for word in four
subsequent books, the only alterations being (i) the names of Petit's collabo-
rators, (2) the title of the book, and (3) the date from which the three-year
privilege was to be reckoned. These four books are, in order of publication,
Origen, Opera ed.J. Merlin, 1512, fol. 4 vols. Jean Petit and Josse Badius, Badius being
the printer of it. Privilege to run from 13 October 1512.
(CH 1512, 1(5))
Gregory of Tours, Historia Francorum, '1522' [sic for 1512], fol. Jean Petit and Josse
Badius, Badius being the printer of it. Privilege to run from 3 November 1512.
(CH 1512, 1(6))
Badius being the printer of it. Privilege to run from 12 August 1514.
(CH 1512, 1(8))
The Origen in addition displays, at the end of Volume iv, in a column
parallel with the French statement of the privilege, a statement in Latin by
