OWNERSHIP AND TRANSFER OF PRIVILEGES
In a number of cases an author or editor who sought a privilege had already
agreed terms with a particular publisher, who is named in the privilege
(CH 1498, i; PR 1508, i; CH 1509, i; CH 1512, 4; CH 1516, i). Where the
author obtained the privilege and remained free to confer the benefit of it on
any publisher he should choose, the formal assignment of the privilege is
sometimes recorded with evident care.
on record in Le second lime des illustrations
Jean Lemaire de Beiges thus placed
de Gaule (CH 1512, 2) the following statement, printed in the book:
L'acteur de ce present livre a communique son privilege royal en toute ample
maniere comme il a obtenu du roy a Geufroy de Marnef Libraire jure de 1'universite de
Paris: et a Hilaire Malican aussi libraire et marchant demourant a Bloys. Et est
interdict a tous autres de non imprimer ce present livre: sur les peines contenues oudit
privilege.
Jean Falcon provided his publisher with the privilege he had obtained for
his commentary on the medical text known as Le Guidon (CH 1515, IA), with
the following declaration, which accompanies the printed text of the privilege:
Item veult ledict maistre Jehan Falcon docteur en medecine impetrant que le
privilege soit communique pour vendre & distribuer ledict livre a honneste personne
Constantin Fradin imprimeur & librayre demourant a Lyon sur le Rosne aupres de
nostre dame de Confort.
The Italian humanist poet Publius Faustus Andrelinus (Fausto Andrelini), a
client of the French court, obtained from the Parlement of Paris a privilege for
his eulogy on the late queen, In Annam Francorum reginam Panegyricon (PA 1515,
3). The publisher, who was Josse Badius Ascensius, set out the privilege on
the verso of the title-page followed by the words:
Faustus autem transtulit priuilegium hoc in Badium.
Faustus.
Pierre Gringore had a privilege from Francis I for Les fantasies de mere Sotte
(CH 1516, i). Following his usual practice he had the book printed himself.
There is however also an undated edition printed for Jean Petit, 'ayant par
transport le privilege dudict Mere Sotte autrement dit Pierre Gringore'. 1 The
privilege was for four years, and Gringore may have been offered favourable
terms by Petit to part with his rights in it when demand for the book
continued.
The Lyon publisher Gilbert de Villiers brought out in 1520 a Traicte de
exhortation de paix, with the statement 'Lequel de Villiers a eu permission de
celuy qui a le privilege pour cinq ans. Seele du grant seel du Roy. Et signe. P.
Grabot', dated 7 August (CH 1520, 2). The work was topical, and may have
emanated from a royal publicist who had obtained a privileg^ut preferred
