secretary J. Bartelemy (CH 1515, 5), again for three years,
to be reckoned
from the date of publication of each of the books included in it. The text of this
privilege, like that granted to Petit by Louis XII at Blois 12 March 1512, was
never published by Petit in its entirety, but it is referred to in a number of
books brought out by Petit in the course of the following few years, which have
so far been identified as follows, in order of their publication:
ii Sept. 1515 Jerome de Hangest, De causis (CH 1515, 5(1) )
8 Nov. 1 5 1 5 J ean Raulin, Sermones in aduentu (CH 1515, 5(2) )
31 April 1518 Jean Raulin, Doctrinale mortis (CH 1515, 5(3) )
i3june 1519 Jerome de Hangest, Moralia (CH 1515, 5(4) )
15 Oct. 1519 Peter of Blois, Opera, ed.J. Merlin (CH 1515, 5(5))
23 March 1520 Jean Raulin, Sermones de Eucharistia (CH 1515, 5(6) )
27 Aug. 1528 Jerome de Hangest, De possibili praeceptorum (CH 1515,5(7))
diuinorum impletione in Lutherum
17 Aug. 1529 Jerome de Hangest, Aduersus antimarianos pro- (CH 1515,5(8))
pugnaculum
In the last-mentioned of these books, the summary provided by Jean Petit
reads as follows:
Julliet L'an Mil cinq cens et quinze.
Par le Roy Ainsi signe Bartelmy [sic]
There are recognisable links between some of these items and the contents
of Petit's earlier 'package' privilege (CH 1512, i). Sermons of Jean Raulin
had featured in the previous privilege. Jacques Merlin, editor of the 1519
Peter of Blois, had edited Origen for Petit's earlier series (CH 1512, 1(5)).
The provision in the 1515 'package' privilege for the works of Jerome de
Hangest, on the other hand, represents the most extraordinary extension to be
found in this period of the effects of a 'package' privilege, providing as it does
for cover of works which were not published until fourteen or fifteen years
later and which, being aimed at Luther, cannot by their very nature even
have been planned at the time when the 'package' was obtained. The last
work by Hangest in the list, the Propugnaculum, is the only one where Petit's
summary^ of the privilege includes the vital clause, namely, that the privilege
was for all new works composed by Hangest ('pour tous les livres composes de
nouveau par nostre maistre de Hangest, dont ce present livre en est').
Whether the chancery fully realised the implications of this concession or not,
