On the head of John Thompson Henderson were placed many crowns- that
of the college graduate, the college professor, the college president in two States
the Convention president in Tennessee and Virginia, vice-president of the
Southern Baptist Convention for two terms, secretary of the laymen's work
for three decades; and now that the years, "that silent army that never loses
a battle," has won a victory, as of January 7, 1946, the crown of righteousness
that fadeth not away. Such things do not just happen; there is a sound
philosophy behind them; and it was true of him, as the poet phrased it:
The elements
So mixed in him, that nature might stand up
And say to all the world, "This was a man."
His passing will recall to many the nobility of his character and the largeness
of his service to his generation. Nature broke her alabaster box over his
birth, and endowed him with choice portions-of her wealth. In his personality
qualities were admirably blended and balanced: the strong with the tender, the
