(Here specific applications of general teaching principles are made to
each age-group, lesson materials are discussed as units, help is given in
selecting and stating aims, selecting proper methods, developing lesson
plans and working out teaching procedures. Current lessons are used as a
basis. Great stress is placed on demonstration and observation.)
8:45-9:35 P.M.—General Inspirational Period
(Messages on the teacher, the Bible, the people, the purpose, the rewards
in the work of the Sunday school.)
PREVIEW STUDIES
These Preview Studies for both the Uniform and Graded Lessons are surveys
of the Bible materials covered in any given quarter. The Editorial Division of
the Sunday School Board prepares outlines to be followed in deriving the
highest good from such studies. These previews center around: a study of
the Bible content, a selection and statement of aims, a grouping of lessons into
units, a consideration of teaching plans, and examination of teaching helps.
Increasingly this feature is becoming a great factor in better teaching. With
the pastor or some other capable leader directing, every church can use this
plan with excellent results. It should be made a regular part of the church's
training program. An award for the completion of Preview Studies is given
in the Sunday School Training Course. Copies of the leaflet outlining Preview
Studies quarter by quarter may be had by writing the Sunday School Department
of the Sunday School Board.
PERIODICALS
Definite helps for teachers' preparation are offered in all of the teachers'
periodicals prepared by the Division of Editorial Service of the Sunday School
Board. Both the content and presentation of the lesson materials are discussed.
Guidance is offered in teaching plans. In addition to periodicals designed particularly
as teachers' helps, THE SUNDAY SCHOOL BUILDER carries regularly
in the general and department sections suggestions for better Bible
teaching.
WEEKLY OFFICERS AND TEACHERS' MEETING
Special stress is placed upon the weekly officers and teachers' meeting in
the churches as a most productive means of improving teaching. Any pastor
or superintendent who sincerely desires better Bible teaching in his school can
realize this desire by carefully planning and conducting such meetings. Here
is the opportunity not only for strengthening the many administrative aids to
good teaching but actually develop good teachers through group study and
skilfully guided observation lesson periods. THE SUNDAY SCHOOL BUILDER
carries general and department suggestions for using the medium of the weekly
officers and teachers' meeting to get better teaching done in every church.
BOOKS ON TEACHING IN THE TRAINING COURSE
General and age-group approaches to better Bible teaching are offered
in the Sunday School Training Course. These books afford opportunities for
the individual teacher through personal study to enrich his teaching procedure
and provide excellent guidance for group study in training schools. These
