1945—In order to house properly the Board's expanding ministries, plans
were in the making for such enlargement of the Ninth Avenue Administration
Building as would meet, it is hoped, all needs for many years to come.
With a united and generously supporting constituency, with constantly enlarging
resources, with a trained and devoted organization which covers our
territory from Maryland and Virginia around to California, with a will to win,
and with complete confidence in the God who brought it into being, the Sunday
School Board faces, with quiet confidence and with readiness to serve, the unparalleled
opportunities and the imperative demands of the present day.
Division of Business Management
HAROLD E. INGRAHAM, Business Manager
The increase of the total business of the Board as indicated in the Executive
Secretary-Treasurer's report is glorious, and for it we give our praise to
God continually. This constant increase means more and more work for the
Business Division. We welcome it, we rejoice in it; our hearts exult because
of the realization that this increase meaiis more Bible study and Christian
training materials for more people throughout our territory and beyond.
PERSONNEL
Analysis of our permanently employed personnel reveals that during the
calendar year of 1945, sixty-five new workers were added and forty left our
employ. We rejoice in having been able to secure additional workers of high
caliber. We are constantly on a search for such workers.
Numbers of our military service personnel have returned. We have welcomed
them everyone and have placed them at work in their old or better positions
and all at more salary than they were receiving when they left. A few
have gone into other fields of work. A few are yet to be released from service.
MR. NOBLE VAN NESS
Back after three years of military service in World War II Noble Van Ness
took up his work as head of our Production Department January 1, 1946. He
entered service as a lieutenant in October, 1942, and came out a major. As
we face the future with greater increased needs, it is a strength indeed to have
him again in this tremendously important place.
COMMITTEES
The Business Manager serves on various committees: The Advisory Committee
of the Board, the Curriculum Committee, the Periodical Promotion Committee,
the Book Committee, the Church Library Committee, the Visual Aids
Committee. He is secretary of the Advisory and Curriculum Committees and
chairman of the Periodical Promotion Committee. These Committees are tremendously
important in the work of the Board and serve as vital instrumentalities
in carrying out the Executive Secretary's slogan, "the combined judgment
and concerted action of all." In addition to formal committee meetings, there
are numberless smaller informal groups that gather for conferences to make
the best possible decisions. A new committee in the Administration Division
has been recently set up, the Church Forms and Supplies Committee. This Committee
is working effectively to perfect and offer all needed church record forms.

OUR BOOR STORES
Our method of administering the work of the book stores is through group
conferences held frequently and including the Executive Secretary, the Business
Manager, and the heads of the Accounting, Order, Production, and Sales
and Advertising Departments with the Business Manager acting as chairman.
It is increasingly evident that additional general organization must be provided.
