HISTORY
The Baptist Bible Institute was organized by the Southern Baptist Convention
in session in New Orleans in 1917, and opened its doors in October, 1918.
Before its opening the school acquired the property which had housed
H. Sophie Newcomb Woman's College. Additional property was added later
for the housing of students and faculty. The debt incurred in securing this
property continued to hamper the development of the new institution until
August 24, 1943.
The school has had three presidents: Dr. Byron H. DeMent, Dr. W. W.
Hamilton, and Dr. Duke K. McCall, who resigned, effective May 1, 1946, to
become Executive Secretary of the Executive Committee of the Southern Baptist
Convention. Under the limitations imposed by debt, all three administrations
have struggled to provide the types of training needed by a widely varied constituency.
The combination of courses necessary to meet this need has been a
goal accepted by each; but attainment has been gradual, preparation for it in
curriculum, faculty, and student classification being made as circumstances
would permit.
LOCATION AND PURPOSE
Unlike the other two seminaries owned and operated by Southern Baptists,
the location of the Baptist Bible Institute was determined by the weakness of
the Baptist cause, rather than by its strength. Until recent years, southern
Louisiana was the despair of Baptist mission efforts. Indeed, the city of New
Orleans was specifically designated as one of the three objects for which the
Home Mission Board was established in 1845.
Along with the missionary aspects of the location of the Baptist Bible
Institute, there was the definite purpose to provide a practical training ground
