For the present the editorial secretary is directing the work of this department.
Other staff members are: William J. Fallis, eaitorial associate and editor

of Sunday school lessons for Intermediates: Robbie Trent, editor of Sunday school
lessons for elementary age groups; Elizabeth D. Meadow, editor in charge of
On the Wing with the Word and On Duty for God and Country; Josephine Pile
and Dorothy Hair, editorial assistants; Mrs. Novella Preston, editor of The Sentinel
and co-editor of Upward; Alice Burford, co-editor of Upward; Mrs. Agnes
Kennedy Holmes, editor of Storytime, Cradle Roll Home, and The Story Hour
Leader.
INCLUSIVE RESPONSIBILITY
It is the work of this department to direct the preparation of all Sunday
school lesson materials and to edit the periodicals in this field. There are at present
forty-four lesson study periodicals (including picture sets used directly or
indirectly with the lesson courses). Thirteen of these relate to the Uniform
Lessons and thirty-one treat the Graded Lessons. The Uniform Lessons are
graded departmentally and continue from the Primary up through the Adult departments.
The Graded Lessons, for use in closely graded Sunday schools, are
for the departments Nursery through Intermediate. We seek through the Department
of Sunday School Curriculum to provide Bible study and teaching helps
that will lead to fuller Bible knowledge, saving faith, and the highest ideals of
Christian character and service.
UNIFORM LESSON WRITERS, 1947
We are now in the process of preparing the lessons for 1947. The writer?
who have accepted the various assignments are as follows: Primary, Mrs. Myrtle
Owens Looney; Junior, Prova Stevens; Intermediate, Mrs. George A. Carver,
Mrs. Dixie Marcum, Crawford H. Lipsey, and G. Avery Lee; Young People, M.
F. Swilley, W. C. Tyler, Norman H. Price, and Olin T. Binkley; Adult, J. Xiles
Puckett, Josef Nordenhaug, Frank K. Means, and Howard M. Reaves. These
writers represent ten states. Other assignments will be made to competent persons,
assisting the editors in ihe treatment of the lesson in The Teacher.
GRADED LESSONS FOR INTERMEDIATES
The work of preparing a new course of Graded Lessons for Intermediates is
going steadily forward. Mr. Fallis and Miss Byrd have the editorial responsibility,
assisted by Miss Hair. The lesson writers are Chester L. Quarles, Mrs. John
Jones, Mrs. Powhatan W. James, Annie Ward Byrd, Claude U. Broach, and
Winston C. Crawley. The course has been organized around the basic areas of
the religious interest and spiritual need of Intermediates. The emphasis throughout
will be the central teachings of the Bible, the necessity for personal faith in
Christ, the high standards of Christian discipleship, and the adequacy of Christ
to meet the needs and hungers of youth for abundant living. A new and attractive
format is being planned for the pupils' books. These lessons will be ready
for distribution beginning October, 1947. It is hoped that they will be used in
all churches having sufficient Intermediates for grading into classes by separate
ages.

TREATING BEVERAGE ALCOHOL
Every feasible effort is made to give instruction through our Sunday school
lessons about the evils of beverage alcohol. This emphasis is not restricted to
one lesson each quarter, but it is our purpose to deal with this matter as often
as the Bible material for the lesson lends itself to instruction and warning along
this line. VVe wish to call upon our teachers in the churches to do all that is possible
to fortify our people against the aggressive strategy of beverage alcohol
forces and to stir Christians to conviction and action in a crusade to prohibit
the widespread sale of this iniquitous product. Attention is called to the fact
