This proved to be a happy solution, the Convention adopted it without debate,
and the new board began. The work has grown until now it is the pride of all
Southern Baptists and one of the wonders of the religious world.

Let it not be thought that our men were indifferent to the work of Christ
1 hey have ever been the main support of our work. In 1907 the Laymen's Missionary
Movement was formed for the promotion of missions to the ends of the
earth. >
In 1926 the name was changed to The Baptist Brotherhood of the South its
objective being the enlarged support of all church and Southwide causes This
great and growing Brotherhood has headquarters in Memphis, Tennessee, Lawson
H; Cooke, secretary, Hugh F. Latimer, associate.
THIRD QUARTER
THE ROMANCE OF SOUTHERN BAPTIST BENEVOLENCES
Jesus loved little children. He took them in his arms, blessed them, and said,
"Suffer the little children to come unto me."
Southern Baptists are caring for needy children through orphanages in
every Southern state. They care for more than three thousand of them.
Jesus healed the sick and commissioned his followers to do the same. Southern
Baptists have twenty hospitals caring for more than 125,000 patients and
rendering more than $1,000,000 a year in free loving service.
Jesus cared for his ministering servants. Southern Baptists in 1918 established
the Relief and Annuity Board to care for aged and needy ministers and
missionaries and their dependent families. Dr. William Lunsford was its first
secretary. This board now has assets of $7,000,000 and distributes approximately
$1,000,000 a year to some three thousand beneficiaries. Dr. T. J. Watts
is executive secretary.
