FOURTH QUARTER
THE ROMANCE OF THE 75-MILLION CAMPAIGN
Following World War I, Southern Baptists launched a great program to
strengthen and increase all its missionary, educational, and benevolent work at
home and abroad.
A careful survey of needs was made. It was found that approximately
$75,000,000 would be needed over a period of five years.
Dr. George W. Truett championed the movement, speaking as follows: "Deep
as the tide of my heart's blood is my conviction that this Convention would make
an awful mistake if it did not make a great forward movement just at this time.
I would rather live for the next twenty years than for two hundred years at
any other period of the world's history. We are standing at the crossroads of
all the years and on every side swift changes are taking place. We all need to
know as never before that we are world citizens.
"After an experience of six months in preaching to soldiers across the water,
I am prepared to say that the only remedy for sin is the gospel of Jesus Christ.
That was all the people wanted, and on every side they are rejecting everything
else as spurious since it has failed to meet the deep need of human hearts. What
are seventy-five million dollars for three million Baptists to raise in five years?
To raise it is the challenge of a great program to a great people."
Dr. L. R. Scarborough led the campaign. The denomination responded in
a great way. When the subscriptions were tabulated, they amounted to $92,000,-
000, which was $17,000,000 more than was asked.
Everyone rejoiced. The work of enlargement was begun. New institutions
were built, old ones were enlarged, mission fields were opened, and more than
two hundred new missionaries were sent out. This was the greatest financial
achievement in Southern Baptist history.
