bell that sounds a clear call for worship on Sunday and during the week. The
name of the church should be properly placed on the building or on the
grounds.
The grounds should be fenced in and planned to offer parking space and an
area for visiting and fellowship. Why not plan some benches under the trees
and walkways lined with shrubs and flowers? There could be a recreational
area with an outdoor fireplace for picnics. If there is a cemetery it should
be well kept and beautiful.
A pastor's home could be provided near by with space for a garden, chickens,
and a barn for the livestock. It could be the same type building as the
church house. The pastor could live with his people and become a part of their
lives. The qhurch should become the center of the community and exert an
influence for good and for God.
Can you think of a more beautiful and inspiring sight than hundreds of
such church centers throughout our country? We can all do our part in making
it come true.
EXHIBITS AND CONFERENCES
The secretary of the department has conducted conferences in association,
state, and southwide meetings. Many of the Sunday school state conventions
were visited. The secretary of the department, assisted by Hardie C. Bass, Jr.,
and T. Lee Anderton, conducted a series of lectures and conferences at the
Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, Louisville, Kentucky. These conferences
are conducted annually at the request of Dr. G. S. Dobbins and have
proved most effective.
PASTORS AND COMMITTEES WELCOME
It is our desire to go as far as it is humanly possible in answering all the
calls that come for conferences and consultations with the churches.
All pastors, church committees, superintendents, directors, and others are
welcome to come to our department and studio, Baptist Sunday School Board,
Nashville, Tennessee, any time we can help you. If you will call, wire, or write,
we will be better prepared to serve you when you come.
DEPARTMENT OF CHURCH MUSIC

We are thankful for the increased interest in Church Music throughout
the Southern Baptist Convention territory. Many churches have realized the
urgent need for a full ministry of music through the age-group plan of choir
work and have inaugurated this plan.
Since our last report we have participated in many schools, conferences,
conventions, and assemblies. We are happy to report that a Church Music
Secretary has been elected in the following states: Arkansas, Texas, Mississippi,
Oklahoma, and Florida. Other states are soon to follow their noble example.
More age-group choirs were organized, more conferences and more church
music schools were conducted this year than during any one year in the history
of Southern Baptists.
The Sixth Southwide Church Music Conference will convene at Ridgecrest,
North Carolina, August 22-30, 1946. This conference offers a marvelous opportunity
for: pastors, choir directors, organists, pianists, songleaders, choir
singers, soloists, music teachers, and students.
It is a pleasure to join the other forces of the Sunday School Board and
the state boards in promoting great church music.
