The Russian "iron curtain" kept the secretary out of Hungary and Rumania,
but it was his good fortune to be able to visit Yugoslavia* He found that
the work had grown steadily during the war years. The ten active pastors
have carried on nobly during their years of separation from their friends in
America. There have been about two hundred additions by baptism per year
to our Baptist membership. In some portions of the country revival fires are
burning brightly.
Many of the people are suffering sorely. I saw hundreds on the streets in
Belgrade selling clothes, bedding, rugs, and other possessions, in order that
they might get money with which to buy food.

The progress of Baptist work in Spain is unusually encouraging. Since 1939
more than five hundred persons have joined our fourteen Baptist churches.
Many of the churches which had been closed by official edict are now open.
Mrs. Bengtson wrote on January 7: "The work is going on m all the churches
and especially in Valencia the chapel is crowded every Sunday. There are
also conversions continually."

During the past year some remarkable changes have taken place m our work.

with thankfulness to God.
