The Japanese congregation, composed of older people who understand litt
English, has grown in numbers and interest during the year. In August, Mr.
Dozier led in a revival meeting that was a blessing to the church. Crowds
came to hear an American preach in fluent Japanese and a number accepted
Christ. Contacts have been made through week-night English classes taught
by Mrs. C. K. Dozier which have enrolled eighty people.
Our Sunday school finished the year with an enrollment of 500. The average
attendance was 390, and the record Sunday 492. Many races are represented
in the membership, but the majority are of Oriental parentage. Mr. J. W.
Bailey teaches a class for service men with an attendance of from fifty to ninety.
The outstanding work of the Woman's Missionary Union has been the
development of young people's organizations with a total of seventy-six enrolled
in the two Young Woman's Auxiliaries, three Girls' Auxiliaries, one Royal
Ambassador Chapter, and one Sunbeam Band.
Each Sunday the ladies serve luncheon to service men and other visitors.
Many write back expressing appreciation of this fellowship. The average
attendance is 130. Three young service men—James O'Connor, Erwin Bennett,
and Alvandon Taylor—felt the call to preach and were licensed by the church.
Other Olivet activities are a Scout program that reaches 120 boys and
girls, religious education classes in two public schools with 113 enrolled, and
a vacation Bible school of 215 children. Sunday afternoon groups conduct
street meetings and mission Sunday schools.
We greatly need adequate buildings. We have a fine location but are
still housed in warehouse sheds. Major Ralph Buflington, architect of Houston,
Texas, has drawn beautiful plans for new buildings. In spite of the fact that
the church gave $3,500 to missions this year, we have accumulated some money
for new buildings, and hope to make a start next year.
Miss Leavell reports: "January 1946 finds the Olivet kindergarten well
into its second year of life and, when compared with this time last year, there
is quite a change to be seen. With the end of the war, equipment has again
been on the market and orders sent to the mainland are coming through.
In June of 1945, in a very simple graduation program, the kindergarten
issued twenty-four diplomas to its twenty-four graduates. When school opened
in September forty-three children were enrolled, and though this year's enrollment
is smaller, the average attendance is higher."

GRACE WELLS
Rev. James D. Belote left in August for furlough, but even in the chang
of pastors the Lord undertook for us. The new pastor, Rev. Tucker N. Callaway,
met the needs of the church in a way that showed he was God's man for
the place. Under his leadership the church has continued to go forward.
The Sunday school has reached out and touched more lives; the average
attendance was over 300 with a peak of 446. To meet the growing needs, two
more portable huts were secured to take care of five more classes.
The Training Union has greatly increased its enrollment. Bible study and
soul-winning have been emphasized. One new union in the Young People's
Department has been organized.
