seven served as field workers. They taught seventeen different books to classes
of women and girls and held twenty-three Bible schools for children. In the
latter they enrolled 2,370.
In June the women's societies observe Training School Day with special
offerings and prayer. This year the offerings reached over $600. Part of
this was put into the "Anne Bagby Memorial Fund" which is being raised by
the Brazilian Women's Missionary Union in honor of Mrs. W. B. Bagby, and the
interest from the principal will provide scholarships for deserving Training
School girls. Misses Mildred Cox and Maye Bell Taylor serve as principals,
elected by a Board of nine ladies, members of churches in the North.
American Baptist College, Recife
President Arnoldo Poggi matriculated almost a thousand students in the
following departments: primary (including kindergarten and preparatory
grades), high school, and junior college. Federal educational laws, detailed
and-exacting, were a real hindrance to the development of a deeply spiritual
atmosphere. Dr. Poggi resigned as president in .order to devote more time to
his medical studies; and Dr. Alfredo Meneses, former student and teacher in
the institution, is the newly-elected president who began his duties on January
first. Chapel exercises and Bible classes were held regularly and semi-annual
revivals were conducted in the college chapel. Miss Katherine Cozzens is
principal of the primary department and was fortunate in having Miss Esther
Blowers to help her with the religious instruction of the children. All the
students are urged to join the educational organizations of the churches.
Capunga Church, located directly across from the college entrance, has as
its pastor Dr. Munguba Sobrinho, one of the ablest preachers in the denomination,
and the church attracts a goodly number of the students to its services.
Nearly all the social life of the college is promoted through the church organizations.
During the year twenty-nine students made professions of faith, and
eleven were baptized and received into Capunga Church.

This has been a year of Baptist history-making in the Argentine Mission.
In spite of the political changes, disturbing factors, problems and difficulties,
the work has gone forward. From down south, Mr. Bowdler sends this report:
"Catholic action has been persistent, but there has been no open persecution.
Although we should like to see uniformly larger congregations, we do not see
that the adult attendance has been affected^ by adverse propaganda.. On the
contrary, probably we are understood better."
In February, at the General -Convention of the one hundred Baptist churches
in Argentina, Uruguay, and Paraguay, nine other churches asked for membership
in this body. Next year there will be even more, since in all sections new
churches are being organized. "Evangelism and Extension" was the keynote
of the Convention, and during the year the churches have continued to stress
this phase of the work. The pastors and workers are busy with the harvest,
but many large fields in all three of these republics are yet untouched by the
gospel.
SPECIAL EVANGELISTIC CAMPAIGNS
During the year most of the churches hold special evangelistic campaigns,
and these services are used of the Lord in the winning of many lost souls.
The Sunday 6 'schools have a Decision Day service at which time many make a
Profession of faith. Most of the Associations have tents and these are kept in
constant use by the churches during the summer. As a means of opening up
new work and reaching new people, this has produced splendid results. In these
S meetings many hear the gospel, who otherwise would never be reached

the city, and if there is no church the small group becomes the nucleus of a
mission which later becomes a church.
