The department is also charged with the responsibility of publishing the
Southern Baptist Handbook. For the first time, in 1946 the Handbook will contain
the record of all Southern Baptist churches.
Various surveys are being made at the present time and the findings will be
released within the next year. The department has also been asked by Southern
Baptist editors to serve as a clearing house for transmission of important news
"events. The department is also co-operating with the Census Bureau in making
plans for the 1946 Census of Religious Bodies.

DEPARTMENT OF CHURCH ARCHITECTURE

During the past year our department has faced the greatest demand in the
histbry of its work. We are grateful for this opportunity of service. We would
give thanks for the blessings of the year and express our gratitude for the
increasing opportunities in the demands which are made on our department.
We are grateful for loyal associates and for the co-operation of the other
departments of the Sunday School Board.
SCOPE OF SERVICE
The Department of Church Architecture serves the 26,134 churches of the
Southern Baptist Convention in their building programs. The Sunday School
Board offers our department as a help to the state mission forces, the home
mission forces, and the foreign mission forces, as we all join hands in the
mighty world mission task that is before us. During the past year we have
served churches in Brazil, Colombia, Canada, China, Hawaii, Mexico, and
Nigeria.
The professional architects have recognized the department as a friend and
are calling on us for supervision and suggestions with increasing frequency.
THE DEPARTMENT STAFF
Hardie C. Bass, Jr., A.I.A., architect, came to our department in July, 1945.
He is making a great contribution to our staff. Charles W. Hoagland, A.I.A.,
architect, has been a valuable member of our staff since 1938. These two
architects are assisted in the drafting room by Miss Edith McMillan, W. 1.
