SOUTHERN BAPTIST CONVENTION
DEFINING THE TRAINING UNION CURRICULUM
The Training Union curriculum is the complete course of training in church
membership offered by this agency. It includes the VenodieBlli^^^et^.
book courses of study, the Standards of Excellence, and all the printed helps
which present the techniques and procedures necessary to operate the program.
Our responsibility for the curriculum includes also the work done in and for
the churches by our Training Union specialists.
THE TRAINING UNION CURRICULUM MATERIALS
The following curriculum materials for the Training Union are produced and
made available to the churches by the Training Union Department:
1. Lesson Courses for all age groups, as published in the Training Union
periodicals.
2. The Graded Baptist Training Union Study Course for all age groups. This
includes also the study course awards. There are fifty-eight books in this
course.
3. The Daily Bible Readers' Course is an important item in the Training
Union curriculum. The references, key verses, comments, prayer thoughts,
and the missionary prayer calendar are published in the Training Union
quarterlies.
4. Guidance materials for all phases of Training Union work, published in
The Baptist Training Union Magazine, Standards of Excellence, and free
literature for all departments.
5. Worship programs for all age groups, published in The Baptist Training
Union Magazine.
How TRAINING UNION LESSONS ARE PLANNED
The editorial work on the Training Union lesson courses is done by the staff
of editors listed in the masthead of this report.
The program materials published in the various Training Union periodicals
are courses of study which form the foundation for training in church membership.
The Training Union editorial staff builds the lesson courses for the Training
Union. The first step in building these courses is to select a central theme,
monthly themes, and basic topics for a year. The selection of these themes and
topics is based upon a careful study of current conditions in the world, the needs
of the churches, and the needs of the persons who will study the lessons. The
Training Union professional workers who do field work are able to offer valuable
assistance in this work as a result of their study and observation of the use of the
literature in the churches. The editors also do field work and conduct surveys
to determine needs.
After the plans are worked out in detail, the basic themes and topics are submitted
to the central Curriculum Committee of the Baptist Sunday School Board,
of which Dr. T. L. Holcomb is chairman. The authorization for the lesson courses
comes from this committee.
The lessons are graded by departments in the Training Union. With the
central theme as a basis, topics are selected for the lessons of each department.
The directors of the various departments on the Training Union staff serve with
Mie editors on lesson committees to select the topics for the different departments.
How TRAINING UNION LESSONS ARE PRODUCED
After the basic plan for the lesson courses is authorized by the Curriculum
Committee of the Sunday School Board, and the adaptations are made by the
committees for the departments, the editors of the Training Union Department
enlist the writers, supervise their work, and edit completely all materials before
they are turned in for publication.
THE FIELD WORE AND RESEARCH FUNCTION
IN CURRICULUM BUILDING
The members of the Training Union staff who do field work render valuable
assistance in building the lesson courses, the textbooks, and all other materials.
In their work in the churches they are able to use many of these materials themselves
and to observe the use of all of them. These workers are included on the
