Schools
Two state Baptist schools and innumerable primary schools annexed to the
churches make their distinct contribution to Baptist life in Bahia. In Taylor
Egidio, Jaguaquara, 510 students, 25 of whom are ministerial students and 45
future training school girls, study in the primary or affiliated high school. The
Baptist church has eight Training Unions and the best departmentalized Sunday
school in the North. Capable Pastor Carlos Dubois directs the school and
serves as pastor of the church. His equally talented wife, authoress, dramatist,
musician, and teacher, directs the choirs and the department of music. In the
state capital, the "Kate White Domestic School" had 111 matriculated and 77
in the extension department of Jaguaquara. "The school is overrun with
women, eager and interested women, who are not afraid to learn new things
and new ideas and who are enthusiastic with the idea of service to humanity,
which we try to bring to each class" wrote Mrs. White to the Mission in June.

This long, narrow, inland state covers such enormous distances without
any convenient means of transportation that our three missionaries and three
pastors still travel by burro, launch, or an occasional truck. In the capital of
Terezina two excellent churches continue their ministry, one having lost its
pastor to the state of Sergipe this year, and the other having as pastor the
veteran Jonas Macedo who, after such long years of service, deserves a helper.
Eight hundred miles to the south is Corrente, one of the few entirely
evangelical cities in North Brazil. The Baptist Industrial Institute with 232
pupils, provides courses through the eighth grade, and sustains a small orphanage
for twelve little girls. The Institute includes a farm on which some of the
students work to help pay their way through school. From it, students have
gone out to organize about fifteen other primary schools nearby, and to open
up preaching points. Eight years ago Mr. and Mrs. E. H. Crouch and Mr.
B. H. Foreman sent a promising young man out to the coast to study medicine;
and now this young doctor and his wife are returning to open up a clinic in
Corrente.
NORTHWIDE INSTITUTIONS
North Brazil Seminary, Recife
This year twenty-four students attended classes, eleven taking the Bachelor
of Theology course, ten the graduate course, and three doing special work.
The publication of a regular quarterly bulletin for circulation among the
churches was initiated, and efforts were made looking toward the organization
of an alumni association.
In May, in an impressive ceremony the foundation stone for the new twostory
building was laid, and work was begun soon thereafter. Through the
generosity of the Foreign Mission Board and the Woman's Missionary Union
of the South the building will be completed without any debt. It contains an
auditorium with seating capacity for three hundred, a library with stack room,
classrooms, as well as officers and professors' rooms, dining hall and kitchen'
infirmary, president's apartment, eighteen bedrooms, and baths.
In November, there were two graduates receiving bachelor's degree and
Dr. Everett Gill was the special speaker on that occasion. The churches throughout
the North have the custom of dedicating to this institution their fifth Sunday
offerings, and Mr. John Mein, president, reported that the 1945 offerings of
$1,800 were three times the amount contributed by Brazilian churches and
conventions in 1942.
Woman's Missionary Training School, Recife
In the two-year course for which only girls who have finished the high
school are eligible, twelve students were matriculated, and twenty-four were
enrolled in the pre-training school course which includes high school work and
religious subjects. On November 30, four graduated from the higher course
one receiving her diploma by proxy, for she is al-eady at work as a missionary
of the Home Mission Board in Porto Franco, Maranhao. Two afternoons a
week classes were offered to pastors' wives or other women of the Recife
churches who had had no preparation but who wished to study. Fifteen women
completed the year's work. On Sundays the girls go out by twos to co-operate
with eighteen different churches of the city. During the holidays (1944-45)
