MAILING AND SHIPPING DEPARTMENT

The mailing and shipping work of the Board occupies seven full floors in
two of our buildings. The entire business of the Board flows through these
channels. Approximately sixty workers handle this work regularly, and this
number is doubled during the rush season. Everybody involved agrees that the
last shipping period was the smoothest that any could remember. Part of the
explanation was that a number of the regular experienced men had returned
from the military service of our country and entered again into their work in
these departments. The foremen of these various departments continue to work
directly with the Business Manager. The Uniform Periodical Mailing, the
Graded Periodical Mailing, the Receiving Room, the Wholesale Shipping Room,
the Retail Shipping Room, the Service Room, and the Post Office with their
various leaders and workers do a real job in handling the vast volume of material
which must be received from various sources and shipped properly both to our
wholesale customers and Stores, and to the many churches and individuals.
We are grateful for the ORDER efficient service DEPARTMENT
rendered by these workers.

The work of the Order Department continues to grow with the increased
business of the Sunday School Board and Baptist Book Stores. Most of the
additional work has been absorbed through increased efficiency in the routine
by our force. The number of full-time employees is 27, with 13 additional
part-time helpers during each quarterly rush. This is only two more full-time
workers than reported in 1942, notwithstanding the increased volume of work
to be handled.
Although we believe our methods are up-to-date and efficient we are always
on the alert to improve the routine or to install new office equipment. Our
thanks to the Business Manager for the purchase of another new Ditto machine
(one of three) and a new electric typewriter yet to be installed.
Now that prospects are bright for more literature to be available, more song
books, aluminum communion ware, and dozens of other items coming on the
market, we look forward to a year of increased service to our customers.

Paper for printing of the books and periodicals is even harder to obtain and
prices have steadn-y increased. Substitutions are frequently necessary and delays,
due to waiting for materials or over- oaded printing presses, seem unavoidable
Increased cost of production seems inevitable. This is especially true in the
