the gospel. Thus there has been established a frontier mission movement,
which is strictly Chinese in origin and development. Among the efficient and
consecrated leaders of that movement are such outstanding Christians as Dr.
Abraham Hsu, Rose Tung, Mary Chen and Lu Uyu Mei. A testimony to the
change that has taken place is the fact that an idol temple has been transformed
into a Christian center and hospital.

The seaplane circled above Tsingtao several times and then, like an
awkward fowl, skidded abreast the blue, choppy waters of the harbor. Motor
launch and rickshaw gave me a lift to the guest-house of Mayor Li Hsien-liang.
I kept a sharp eye on the coolies who carried my luggage. A twenty-threepound,
paper-wrapped bundle contained ten million dollars (Chinese ^national
currency) m thousand-dollar bills. This bundle was an appropriation by China's
War Area Service Co-ops for the entertainment of U. S. service personnel in
Tsingtao.
For two weeks I was the guest of Mayor Li and had an hour's conference
with him daily, concerning Chinese government matters.
In addition to my military work as a liaison officer of the National Military
Council, I was able to do considerable church work. As I flew into the liberated
areas I always got in touch with the churches and pastors.
Soon after my arrival in Tsingtao, Pastor Wang Chih-pu, one of my students
m the Seminary at Hwanghsien, greeted me. Except for two weeks following
the Pearl Harbor attack, the Tsingtao Baptist Church had continued worshin
services interruptedly during the eight years of enemy occupation. A massive
concrete machine-gun emplacement was built on the front steps but the wor
shippers by-passed the obstruction and found their way into the sanctuary

Only thirty miles away, the Communists were surrounding the citv The
Japanese had not yet surrendered arms.
To my great delight I found that Pastor Wang was ministering to manv
American service men. He cannot speak English; but Mr. James Wu, a layman,
