eyes ripped out is bound to vomit. 21<br />

If we did not know that cataract-removal operations had been practiced<br />

for centuries 22 and that Herophilus had described the optic and oculomotor<br />

nerves, it would be just about impossible to figure out what “emission<br />

<strong>of</strong> fluids” and what “veins” were meant in Pliny’s sources.<br />

Pliny devotes many pages <strong>of</strong> his work to the life <strong>of</strong> bees. Having read<br />

somewhere about the reason why beehives have hexagonal cells, he replaces<br />

the complex scientific arguments with the following explanation,<br />

which naturally seems simpler to him: “Every cell is six-sided because<br />

each side is the work <strong>of</strong> one leg.” 23<br />

Pliny reports the measurement <strong>of</strong> the meridian, <strong>of</strong> 252,000 stadia, cor- page 259<br />

rectly attributing it to Eratosthenes and showing admiration for the result.<br />

How does he think this result was reached? He talks about the burial <strong>of</strong> a<br />

geometer, Dionysidorus, and recounts:<br />

It is said that they found in Dionysidorus’ tomb a letter from him<br />

to the living, according to which he had traveled from the tomb to<br />

the lowermost point <strong>of</strong> the earth, and the distance was 42,000 stadia.<br />

And there were geometers who interpreted the letter to mean that it<br />

was sent from the center <strong>of</strong> earth, which is down as far as possible<br />

from the top, like the center <strong>of</strong> a ball. From which data a computation<br />

was carried out, and they announced that the length <strong>of</strong> the meridian<br />

was 252,000 stadia. 24<br />

Thus Pliny makes much <strong>of</strong> the calculation whereby the circumference<br />

was obtained from the radius given in the letter (using the value 3 for π,<br />

to boot). About Eratosthenes’ method, not a word. Pliny is only able to<br />

imagine as evidence a direct measurement. <strong>The</strong> problem is not stupidity,<br />

<strong>of</strong> course. Eratosthenes’ procedure — using a scientific theory as a model<br />

for the concrete world — is absolutely incomprehensible to someone who<br />

belongs to a prescientific culture. Pliny is thus forced to replace the true<br />

intellectual voyage <strong>of</strong> Eratosthenes by the imaginary concrete voyage <strong>of</strong><br />

Dionysidorus, though he prefaces it by saying that it is a prime example<br />

<strong>of</strong> “Greek boasting”.<br />

Seneca says that wine struck by lightning becomes solid and stays that<br />

way for exactly three days, after which time it kills or maddens anyone<br />
