____ A deciduous shrub, 3 to 6 m tall, often with multiple stems and<br />
erect, upward-rising branches; shoots arranged in a fishbonelike<br />
manner; scented leaves 2 to 3 cm long, edges finely wavy<br />
and irregularly indented - a specially effective specimen plant.<br />

____ A slow-growing tree, 10 to 20 (even 30) m tall, with a narrow,<br />
conical (seldom flat) crown; branches grow horizontally and<br />
well-branched; shoots light bronze; young and old bark appears<br />
grey; leaves alternate, obovate to elliptic, 5 to 13 cm long and<br />
2.5 to 7.5 cm wide, shiny green, turning splendidly orange-red<br />
to bright scarlet red, often towards violet; green flowers borne as<br />
florets in a capitulum, appearing in April; fruits oval, up to 1.2 cm<br />
long, bluish-black – one of the most striking woody plants with<br />
effective autumnal colours. S. Zone 6b.<br />
