PINUS (Continued)
peuce - Macedonian Pine
____ A fast-growing, 10 to 20 m tall pine with slender, conical crown,
with branches almost to ground level when grown as specimen,
similar growing habit as the Arolla Pine (P. cembra), though distinctly
faster in growth; needles in clusters of 5, on twig ends
clustered brush-like, green to greyish-green - an absolutely
hardy pine, totally indifferent to any soil, rather tolerant to rust,
even suitable for smaller gardens with its slender crown. D, S,
St. Zone 5a.
pumila ´Glauca´ -
____ About 1 m tall with its sturdy branches and broad, bushy growing
habit, equally striking are the intensively greyish-blue needles.
B, H, K, R, Z. Zone 4.
schwerinii (= P. wallichiana x P. strobus) -
____ About 20 m tall tree with a loose-growing habit as the branches
in a whorl are always of different lengths (in contrast to other
pines); needles are 8 to 11 cm long, fine, hanging, and with
striking bluish-white stomatal lines; early fruiting with lovely, large,
cylindrical cones - an excellent substitute for P. wallichiana
which is rather sensitive to frost. S. Zone 6b.
strobus ´Radiata´ (= ´Nana´) -
____ A dwarf cultivar of the Weymouth pine (P. strobus), with stocky,
rounded growth, up to 1.5 m tall when older; densely branched,
at shoot-ends are green, needles of varying lengths and pointed
outwards, inner side of needles distinctly bluish-green - a very
lovely, undemanding dwarf cultivar, that should not be planted
on dry, warm, calcareous soils. H, K, Z. Zone 5a.
sylvestris - Scots Pine
____ A well-known, native forest tree, very fast-growing, reaching 20
to 30 m tall; cone-shaped when young, often having picturesque,
broad, umbrella-like crown and foxy red bark; needles in
twos, rigid, somewhat twisted and bluish to greyish-green - a
park and forest tree for very poor soils. D, S, St, Zone 1.
