THUJA (Continued)
orientalis ´Pyramidalis Aurea´ -
____ A tall-growing, very densely branched cultivar, that grows narrowly
cone-shaped when young, and having a broad base when
older; young shoots remain golden yellow for a long time, later
greenish-yellow and then copper-gold in winter - the loveliest
amongst the golden, columnar cultivars, hardy and effective as
a specimen. D, St. Zone 6b.
plicata ´Atrovirens´ -
____ A sturdy and loose-growing cultivar, with especially deep dark
green, shiny needles - very good for hedges. H, R, S. Zone 6a.
plicata ´Aurescens´ -
____ A golden cultivar of the Western Red Cedar (T. plicata); having
similar growing habit as the species, 10 to 15 m tall, with pointed
to broadly cone-shaped crown, and branching almost to ground
level; branchlets very shiny on the upper side, with greenishyellow
tips - a valuable and hardy plant for hedging. H, R, S.
Zone 6a.
plicata ´Excelsa´ -
____ 10 to 15 m tall tree, growing loosely column-like with its horizontally
and loosely arranged twigs; the rough and rather thick, shiny
dark green needles are significantly larger than the species
- an absolutely hardy plant, tolerates shady positions, suitable
for hedging or for wind protection, but equally well as a magnificent
park tree on fresh, nutrient-rich soils in humid areas. H,
R, S. Zone 6a.
THUJOPSIS - HIBA - CUPRESSACEAE
dolabrata - Hiba
____ A small, up to 15 m tall tree, though mostly as bushy shrub, with
twigs spreading in a flat, even plane; leaves leathery, scale-like,
shiny green above and with striking, silvery white specks on the
underside - a lovely, slow-growing conifer, that is not as very
demanding with regards to air and soil moisture as often presumed.
R, S. Zone 6a.
