nigra nigra (= P. nigra var. austriaca, P. austriaca, P. laricio) - Austrian Pine
____ Up to 20 m tall, fast-growing tree, with branches almost to
ground level and a conical crown when young, later growing to
a picturesque, broad and flattened crown; needles are long, rigid,
pointed and very dark green - an undemanding pine, that
grows on all soils and also tolerant to dry heat. D, K, R, S, St.
Zone 5b.

nigra ´Pyramidata´ -
____ Grows column-like, at times more cone-shaped, 20 to 25 m tall;
branches grow densely, erect, more or less parallel to the trunk;
needles leaves are dense, somewhat shorter than the species;
growing naturally in the Tavschanli area in Turkey - a lovely,
robust and undemanding columnal cultivar for varied use, even
suitable on extreme positions. D, K, R, S, St. Zone 5b.
parvifl ora ´Glauca´ -
____ A very attractive tree in varied shapes and sizes, with its slow
growth hardly reaching 10 m tall; young plants are mostly loosely
branched, having a much broader crown only when older;
needles in clusters of 5, much more rigid than the species, bent
and very twisted, on twig-ends clustered brush-like, undersides
of needles are vivid bluish-white; fruits appear in abundance
even in young plants - an ideal pine for heather gardens and for
small house gardens. K, R, S, St. Zone 6a.
parvifl ora ´Negishi´ -
____ A Japanese selection with bushy, upright, broad, conical growing
habit; foliage a healthy, fresh, moss green on the outside,
and light silvery on the inside, the twisted needles provide a vivid
contrast in the different colours. K, R, S, St. Zone 6a.
