____ A very variable shrub, hardly over 1 m tall, with many suckers<br />

and slender, very densely thorny or bristly shoots; flowers appear<br />

in May/June, numerous, mainly white, occasionally yellow<br />

or pink; fruits flatly rounded, dark bronze later black - a species<br />

for reinforcements of sanddunes or slopes, can grow well in calcareous<br />

and dry soils. B, D, H, St. Zone 3.<br />

rubiginosa - Eglantine, Sweet Briar<br />

____ A fast-growing, 2 to 3 m tall, stocky-growing shrub with short and<br />

very thorny shoots; leaves dark green, with the scent of apples;<br />

flowers 3 cm across, light pink with very bristly stalks; fruits<br />

scarlet red, egg-shaped - a lovely wild shrub for free-growing<br />

hedges. H, R, St. Zone 5a.<br />

rugosa - Japanese Rose<br />

____ 1 to 2 m tall shrub with many suckers; shoots are thick, covered<br />

densely with thorns and bristles; leaves rather rough, wrinkled,<br />

glossy dark green, turning golden yellow in autumn; flowers 6<br />

to 8 cm across, open widely, rosy red to crimson, appearing in<br />

May/June, with continuous flowering till autumn; fruits flat and<br />

round, up to 2.5 cm wide, scarlet red, economically usable,<br />

appearing early - an undemanding shrub, tolerant to wind, for<br />

hedges and natural planting, very important for mass planting.<br />
