METASEQUOIA - REDWOOD - TAXODIACEAE
glyptostroboides - Dawn Redwood
____ A tall, deciduous tree with a regular, broad or narrowly conical
growing habit, almost horizontal branches; needle-like foliage is
delicate, fresh green, turning bright rusty red in autumn, dropping
off together with the short shoots; the tree resembles Taxodium
distichum in growing habit and foliage - an excellent, fastgrowing
tree for parks, absolutely frost-hardy, indifferent to soil
conditions and tolerant to industrial areas. R, S, St. Zone 6b.
MICROBIOTA - MICROBIOTA - CUPRESSACEAE
decussata - Siberian Cypress
____ An evergreen dwarf conifer from Southeast-Siberia, hardly over
40 cm tall and can achieve a diameter of 2 m – therewith almost
circular; the branches that either lie close to the grounds or
protruding slightly upward are hanging elegantly when allowed
to grow beyond the rims of rocks, walls or troughs; the minute,
scale-like leaves are fresh green, turning bronze in autumn /
winter; an extremely decorative, gracious and at the same time
robust and undemanding dwarf conifer which possibly is superior
to the most low-lying and flat-growing conifers due to its multiple
usage. Very suitable for graves, roof or rock gardens, troughs or
even for plantings on rocky or cliffy edges, and equally excellent
and undemanding as ground cover; Microbiota decussata was
introduced in 1968 by the forestry department of the botanical
gardens of Hann. Münden; wins the ´Award of Merit´ at the Chelsea
Flower show in London in 1974, and the Gold Medallion at
the Flora-Nova in Boskoop in 1976. B, K, R, St, Z. Zone 3.
