gallica - French Rose<br />

____ Up to 1 m small shrub, with tendency to build suckers; shoots<br />

upright-growing with thorny bristles; leaves rough and leathery,<br />

bluish above, greyish-green underneath with an early leaf-fall;<br />

flowers strikingly large, fragrant, cup-shaped, pink-carmine, in<br />

June/July; fruits brick-red, bristly. B, D, Z. Zone 5a.<br />

glauca (= R. rubrifolia) -<br />

____ Up to 3 m tall shrub with slender shoots; shoots slightly bristly,<br />

bronze-red and covered with felt; leaves with a purplish glaucous<br />

hue; flowers pale red to carmine in June/July; fruits round and<br />

red. H. Zone 5a.<br />

majalis - Cinnamon Rose, May Rose<br />

____ An upright-growing, up to 1.5 m tall shrub with underground<br />

suckers; shoots are slender, reddish brown, often thornless;<br />

pinnate leaves with 5 to 7 leaflets, long to elliptic, downy and<br />

green above, densely covered with greyish hairs below, simply<br />

toothed; flowers 1 to 3 in a cluster, carmine, up to 5 cm wide, in<br />

May/June; fruits flat and round, 1 cm thick, dark red, bare and<br />

smooth. B. Zone 5a.<br />

nitida - Shining Rose<br />

____ 50 to 70 cm tall shrub, with dense shoots and suckers; shoots<br />

reddish brown, densely covered with short prickles; leaves very<br />

glossy dark green, turning strong bronze-red in autumn; flowers<br />

4 to 5 cm across, pink, fragrant - a specimen for rock and heather<br />

gardens, excellent for mass planting. B, St, Z. Zone 4.<br />

pendulina (=R. alpina) - Alpine Rose<br />

____ Up to 1.5 m tall shrub with mainly reddish, otherwise green<br />

shoots, often covered with prickles; leaflets opposite, 7 to 9,<br />

narrowly elliptic, fresh to dark green above, light green underneath,<br />

with yellow autumn colours; flowers mainly single, striking<br />

pink-crimson, in May/June, and richly flowering; fruits orangered,<br />

bottle-shaped, mainly arching and overhanging - suitable<br />

for embankments, stabilising of slopes, or as accompanying<br />

greenery on streets. B. Zone 5a.<br />
