PICEA (Continued)
pungens ´Koster´ - Koster´s Blue Spruce
____ The most well-known amongst the blue-coloured spruces,
having a very regular, cone-shaped growing habit; branches
spread in whorls; needles slightly sickle-shaped, remaining silvery
blue even in winter. D, K, S, St. Zone 4.
PINUS - PINE - PINACEAE
aristata - Bristlecone Pine
____ A small, slow and upright-growing tree, 3 to 6 m tall, with loose,
candelabra-like branching; needles are dark green, 2 to 4 cm
long, lie close to twigs, and covered with fluffs of resins - an
interesting, absolutely hardy and decorative small conifer, suitable
in sunny, dry positions; found in the dry, high, mountainous
regions of Utah, Nevada and California in the USA; over 4000
year old trees were viewed as a new species Pinus longaeva
instead (with differing cones, and needles with hardly any resinal
secretions). D, K, S. Zone 6a.
cembra - Arolla Pine, Swiss Stone Pine
____ A native tree in the Alps, 10 to 25 m tall, with branches almost
to the ground when grown singly, and building a narrow, conical
crown; needles in dense, brush-like clusters of 5, fresh green
with bluish-white stomatal bands - an especially lovely, very
slow-growing pine, that finds its place even in small house gardens.
R, S. Zone 4.
contorta - Lodgepole Pine, Shore Pine
____ A small, hardly over 10 m tall tree with a contrasting, unique
and irregular growing habit; needles are twisted, dark green to
yellowish-green - an undemanding pine, that grows well even in
very light soils. S. Zone 5a.
