japonica - Arrow Bamboo
____ Growing tightly upright, 2 to 4 m tall; blades shiny green and
long adhering to the stem; leaves 3 to 4 cm in width and 20 to
25 cm long; hardy (up to -24°C) - used in Japan as arrows in
arrow-shooting sport due to its especially straight stems. S, H,
K. Zone 6b.
SASA - BAMBOO - POACEAE
palmata (= S.p. f. nebulosa) - Broad Leaved Bamboo
____ Growing upright and broad, up to about 2 m tall; stems green
to yellowish, with irregular dark brown spots from their second
year; leaves large up to 30 cm long, fresh green, palm-like and
arranged on both sides of stems. An attractive large-leaved
bamboo especially decorative against the light, for mass planting
near water features or pond-like areas as well as for container
garden. Protection against spread of rhizomes recommended;
hardy up to about -18°C. H, K, S. Zone 6b.
