abies ´Nidiformis´ - Nest Spruce
____ Hardly over 1 m tall with a rounded and rather flattened growing
habit; branches grow from the middle slanting upwards and due
to the missing central stem, plant grows in the form of a nest;
branches stay fan-like together and are slightly twisted - a very
popular, and unmistakable dwarf spruce. K, Z. Zone 3.
abies ´Pumila Glauca´ -
____ A very flat and dense-growing dwarf cultivar, with shoots that are
arranged like platters over one another; shoot-ends hang slightly;
needles are dark bluish-green, and arranged semi-radially - a
decorative dwarf cultivar, that hardly grows beyond 1 m tall even
when older. K, Z. Zone 4.
abies ´Pygmaea´ -
____ A very slow yet dense-growing conifer, hardly 1 m tall, having
a blunt, conical shape; needles are rather thick, fresh green
and arranged radially - a lovely dwarf spruce, that was already
known since around 1800. K, Z. Zone 3.
abies ´Wills Zwerg´ -
____ A small cultivar, that reaches about 2 m tall in 30 years, and with
a very dense, regular, cone-shaped growing habit; interesting is
the colour change of the needles on the lammas shoots, the light
green needles of new shoots (lammas shoots) appear distinctly
from the older, dark green foliage. K, Z. Zone 4.
breweriana - Brewer´s Weeping Spruce
____ A tree-like, 15 to 20 m tall tree with narrow, conical growing habit
and horizontal branches, whereupon the long, delicate twigs
hanging from them up to often 2 m long; needles are dark green,
20 to 25 mm long, arranged loosely and radially - the most elegant
of all spruces with an unique appearance, that is absolutely
hardy and can even find its place in a small garden. S. Zone
6a.
glauca ´Alberta Globe´ (= P. albertiana ´Conica´) -
____ A dwarf cultivar (mutation of P. glauca ´Conica´) with a rounded
shape; needles are fine, green, 6 to 9 mm long - a lovely dwarf
cultivar, especially attractive and neat for small areas. K, S, Z.
