sargentii (= P. sachalinensis, P. serrulata var. sachalinensis) - Sargents Cherry
____ A sturdy-growing, 15 to 18 m tall tree, with upright-growing
crown when young, later going broader; leaves 6 to 12 cm long,
reddish at shoot break, later green, turning wonderfully orange
to carmine red in the autumn; flowers simple, pure pink, up to 4
cm across, appear 2 to 4 in flat umbels in late April - a slightly
demanding cultivar as specimen or for planting in groups in large
gardens and parks; one of the loveliest East-Asian wild cherries,
especially due to its excellent autumn colours and the lovely patterns
of its bark. R, S, St. Zone 5a.
serotina - American Bird Cherry, Black Cherry, Rum Cherry
____ Up to 35 m tall, mostly smaller, with narrow to long-growing
crown and short, horizontal-growing branches; leaves leathery,
up to 8 cm long, glossy and dark green above; flowers white,
borne in 10 to 14 cm long, cylindrical racemes in May/June; fruits
oval, dark magenta, very decorative - a lovely tree for parks, tolerant
to drought, an undemanding plant for natural plantings.
D, R, St. Zone 4.
serrulata ´Amanogawa´ (= P. serrulata f. erecta) -
____ 4 to 5 m tall cultivar with strictly upright, column-like habit of
growth; leaves at shoot break yellowish-bronze; flowers in dense
clusters, mostly simple, light pink, slightly fragrant, appearing
mid April - excellent for small gardens. R, S. Zone 6a.
serrulata ´Kanzan´ (= ´Hizakura´) -
____ A fast-growing tree, 7 to 10 m tall, with stiff, outward slanting
branches, building a wide funnel-like crown; leaves at shoot
break bronze, turning green later; flowers appear out of dark
carmine flower buds in April, large, dark pink, double, sitting in
clusters - one of the most popular cultivars. R, S, St. Zone 6a.
serrulata ´Kiku-shidare-zakura´ (= P. serrulata f. rosea) - Weeping Cherry
____ 4 to 6 m tall weeping cherry, with branches hanging near the
trunk and partly arching well away from the trunk, building a
loose, semi-round crown; leaves bronze at shoot break; flowers
dark pink, double, appearing in April/May in dense clusters - an
elegant, hanging cherry tree with a small crown. R, S. Zone 6a.
