abies (= P. excelsa) - Christmas Tree, Common Spruce, Norway Spruce
even in calcareous soils and an excellent plant for hedges in
areas with sufficient air humidity. H. Zone 2.
abies ´Acrocona´ -
____ Having a broad, conical and irregular growth, growing tree-like
when older; the long and huge cones are already found on the
shoot ends of young plants, cones are red when young and exceptionally
decorative. K. Zone 4.
abies ´Acrocona Pusch´ - NEW!
Zone 4b.
abies ´Echiniformis´ -
____ A very slow-growing dwarf cultivar, forming a hedgehog-like
polster with its fine, slightly protruding branchlets; annual shoots
reach about 15 to 20 mm long, light green needles (each about
3 to 5 mm long) or the needles can be in dense clusters- a very
lovely dwarf spruce for rock gardens or for planting on graves
or in troughs; grows to about only 20 cm tall in 30 years. K, Z.
Zone 4.
abies ´Inversa´ (= P. excelsa inversa) -
____ About 10 m tall, narrow, almost pillar-like growing, with branches
and shoots hanging almost vertically and growing densely close
to trunk; needle-like leaves are rather thick, dark green and shiny
- a peculiar spruce, that can be trained to grow into varied
shapes; trunk must be trained upwards at first. S. Zone 4.
abies ´Little Gem´ -
____ A dwarf spruce with a flat and rounded shape, originated as
a mutation from a twig of ´Nidiformis´, and similarly features
a somewhat nest-like growing habit; the delicate and densely
growing twigs grow from the middle onwards; shoots and branchlets
are covered with very fine and densely staying needles - a
very pleasant and loosely growing dwarf spruce. K, Z. Zone 4.
