lusitanica - Portugal laurel<br />

____ A large evergreen shrub with a compact and well-branching<br />

growth (growing to 20 m tall in its natural habitat). Twigs smooth,<br />

red. Leaves long and narrow, oval, with well-defined tips, 6-12<br />

cm long, slightly toothed, shiny dark green above and light green<br />

below. Flowers white, borne in racemes 12-15 cm long, appearing<br />

in June. Fruits oval, red, about 8 mm long. A cultivar that<br />

withstands pruning - suitable for hedges and container planting,<br />

or as specimen and even group planting, with relative good winter<br />

hardiness depending on location. H, K, R, S, St. Zone 7a.<br />

mahaleb - Mahaleb Cherry, Perfumed Cherry<br />

____ A large shrub or tree with multiple stems, 5 to 7 (sometimes even<br />

10) m tall, with broadly laden and overhanging habit of growth;<br />

flowers white, 1.5 cm across, fragrant, appearing in April/May in<br />

umbellated racemes; fruits 6 to 10 mm thick when older, black<br />

- a robust large shrub for extremely dry areas, slopes or embankments<br />

etc, fruits as food supply for birds. D, R, S. Zone 5a.<br />

____ About 15 m tall tree with narrow, dense and ovehanging crown;<br />

leaves elliptic, dark green above and bluish-green underneath,<br />

turning yellow in autumn; flowers white, pungently fragrant, borne<br />

in loose, hanging racemes with up to 15 to 20 flowers each<br />

in April/May; fruits round, pea-size and black - a plant tolerant to<br />

shade, suitable for natural plantings or in groups in moist soils.<br />

slender, bluish-white underneath, with bronze to scarlet red autumn<br />

colours; very free-flowering, flowers simple, white, with flat<br />

- a delicate shrub, tolerant to drought and suitable for rock gardens,<br />

planting in troughs or as an interesting ground cover in<br />
