In each meet<strong>in</strong>g, the focus was on the debate <strong>of</strong> the experiences themselves<br />

and <strong>in</strong> the discussion <strong>of</strong> ideas that seemed to be emerg<strong>in</strong>g. Time was monitored<br />

to ensure that whilst those who presented the experiences might talk<br />

<strong>for</strong> 15 m<strong>in</strong>utes, everybody else had to content themselves with between 2–<br />

5 m<strong>in</strong>utes <strong>of</strong> comment. Like a town meet<strong>in</strong>g, Quaker church gather<strong>in</strong>g or<br />

the eighteenth century French civic assemblies, everybody sat around a square<br />

and raised hands to put their names down on the list to talk. Nobody was
