Ananda (1) occupies the right, and is represented as a youth, thus making quite with the disciple on the left. a contrast The two last are Prajnatara and Bodhidharma, his disciple. The name of the latter is transliterated in Chinese by the characters Tnh-mo j|§ )|| (2 , which has led some writers to confound him 1 with the Apostle S Thomas. Beyond a certain similarity of sound, there is, however, no connection between the two. Two other patriarchs, widely honoured in China, and frequently represented on Buddhist prints and works, are Asvagosha, Ma-iriing Mj % ( 3 )> and Nagarjuna, Lung-shu ]|| ^ (4). In the large Bnddhist monastery, P'u-t'i-shen-yuen ^ ^ yjjlp |J£, situated outside the Eastern gate of Jil-hao jft\ j|L, in North Kiangsu ~/X fijft, Sakyamuni is surounded by 10 of his principal disciples, of whom the following are the names (5).
