THE GREAT BUDDHIST SAINT<br />

Ta-sheng ^ H (A.D 627-710).<br />

In A.D. 705, as the Dowager-Empress Wu, Wu-Heu j£ jgf,<br />

was deposed (1), and Chung-tsung r£i £f£, <strong>of</strong> the T'ang j|*- dynasty,<br />

proclaimed emperor, the Buddhist teacher, Seng-k'ia ta-shi jffi jj}\]<br />

•fc j^jfj, arrived from India. He was a native <strong>of</strong> the West, Si-yuh<br />

W fejc (2)? a nd bore in the eyes <strong>of</strong> the public the name <strong>of</strong> Ho ffij (3).<br />

This Hindu monk abode at first in the Lungshing monastery,<br />

Lung-hsing-sze f| M. ^f, at Hwai-ngan -/£| -^, but later on he<br />

went to Lin-hwai-hsien $% $£ ]§|, then a district city dependent on<br />

Sze Chow flrt[ j'\], in Nganhwei 4^ H£. Here, he begged the<br />

inhabitants to grant him a piece <strong>of</strong> land for the erection <strong>of</strong> a<br />

monastery, and to this they kindly agreed. As work was being<br />

carried on, the lay helpers, K'ia-lan jjjfl J^, unearthed a stone slab,<br />

which belonged to the monastery <strong>of</strong> "Copious Incense", Hsiang-<br />

tsih-sze :ff ^ ^f-, and also a golden statue bearing the inscription<br />

"Buddha the world-illuminating king", P'u-chao-wang-fuh j^ Bi3<br />

Wu, or Heavenly Queen, usurped the throne on the death <strong>of</strong> Kcto-tsung %<br />

sacrifices to heaven. She tried to spread the belief that she was the Supreme<br />

Being. Despotic, harsh, vindictive and cruel, she was at last deposed A.D.<br />

705, and the rightful heir, Chung-tsung<br />
