chromaticism. This chromaticism arises from the intermittent<br />

parallelism <strong>of</strong> the essentially triadic accompaniment. This parallelism<br />

is most noticeable in the first bar <strong>of</strong> the extract, where the three<br />

upper lines ascend in parallel minor triads in second inversion.<br />

Interestingly, a modal quality is preserved despite the chromaticism <strong>of</strong><br />

the inner harmony. <strong>The</strong> melody ascribes an arc from dominant to dominant<br />

<strong>of</strong> the A aeolian mode.<br />

No.2 movement I (1951), confirms <strong>and</strong> consolidates the findings in the<br />

Diversions extract. Again, a dual tonic-dominant is established, but<br />

rather than this arising from the alternate notes <strong>of</strong> a pedal ostinato,<br />

the two pedal notes are sustained in different orchestral lines.<br />
